How Magic Works

This is a page from my next zine, which will also serve as a formal introduction to the world Arc lives in.

  1. Great work on hammering down this magic system!
Aesthetically, I love how the page has a “crinkled paper” effect, and all of the font choices (main text and “fig.0x” text). Combined with the schematic drawings, it really gives off a handbook vibe 🙌🏻 I also really appreciate and enjoy how simplistic yet effective the schematics are at conveying the information expressed in the text. Though I’m curious if this specific example is for characters that can “project”? Or am I reading too much Nen into it?
I’m actually curious about your idea about Arc’s luck magic too. I’m excited to see how that idea has fleshed into this system if at all.
In the vein of Nen-spiration, I LOVE how this is a much simplified system. However, I can recognize that the system as described leaves a lot of room for power diversity—that will be fun to see in action! From what I understand, after a “word that’s your version of Nen-user” uses “project,” their magic then could be used only on themself, an object, or the area, but the “user” cannot oscillate between being able to do all three at various times? Like how Killia is an Emitter, then Arc might be a “Gatherer”-type magic user? I’m so curious! I can’t wait to see how it shakes out because I know you’ve been working on this system for a long time!
    (I totally treated this as a comics letter-column 😅😅)

  2. Thanks for your letter 😉 The story has gone through a lot of changes but this is always kind of the system I had in mind. I'm still working on how it applies to different characters and what their abilities are, but essentially yeah, I wanted to make a system that would give some consistency and logic to the magic without binding me too much as a writer.
A little more will be explained in the zine but I love all the thought you put into it!
